Americans typically eat more red meat and dairy, and enjoy sugary desserts and junk food for snacks. The Chinese eat more poultry and fish, much less dairy (due in part to a high incidence of lactose intolerance), and prefer fruit for dessert and nuts for snacks.

Read More »After a long, cold winter in Beijing, my friend and I headed to the Summer Palace on the outskirts of the city to enjoy the warm sunshine of our first Chinese spring. As we walked around the vast grounds, we came upon a group of older people dancing in a free-flowing, joyful way, as if they were shaking off the winter cold and celebrating spring together. While some wore elaborate sequins and silks, others wore more ordinary clothing; regardless, everyone seemed to be at least a little dressed up. Most were paired off, but everyone was smiling as they glided about the square to the exotic music coming from a large boom box. Intrigued, we stopped to watch the happy dancers. Before we knew it, a few of them came forward to encourage us to join them. One at a time, we took several turns around the square, doing our best to mimic the dancers' intricate hand movements before breathlessly returning to the sidelines to watch. Over the course of our time in China, the sight of older people dancing happily, or energetically doing calisthenics or tai chi in the numerous parks, was but one of the country's many charms.

Read More »Perhaps the Chinese penchant for public napping explains how they have managed to keep getting more sleep than Americans. The IKEA superstore in Beijing is known to be a place where Chinese can be found sleeping on the many beds and sofas on display. It's also not uncommon to see people napping on the benches and grassy areas in Beijing's many parks, and even sometimes on the walkways. As for quality of sleep, given that the "nappers" are often drooling and snoring with abandon, it's probably safe to assume they are sleeping soundly and not just dozing. Public exercise is popular in China, where groups of people practicing tai chi are ubiquitous. Originally developed as a martial art, tai chi promotes flexibility, strength, balance, and focus, and helps relieve stress, in part, through meditation. Not surprisingly, tai chi is said to significantly increase longevity. Group dancing remains my personal favorite activity to watch in China, where it's common to see grannies lined up on the street corners and public squares, grinning as they move to the beat of the tunes blasting from their communal boom box. It's no wonder they're smiling, since they're getting exercise and socializing at the same time, while reducing stress and contributing to their longevity. Given that Chinese society is grounded in Confucian values, the older a person gets, the more respected he or she becomes. This increases a person's self-esteem, which in turn reduces stress and also increases longevity. All of these important factors work together to overcome the not insignificant rates of cancer in China, due to severe pollution, among other factors. So while China clearly needs to reduce air, water and soil contamination levels, we in the U.S. could learn a thing or two from the Chinese. Maybe dancing in public is a good place to start.
