"What we're really attracted to is familiarity, so seeing something familiar in someone else often forms some kind of attraction," Read said. "We also know that anthropologically, we used to feel safe with people who looked like our own tribe.

We often hear that opposites attract, but when it comes to the laws of attraction, it seems that we could be seeking out similarities instead. People naturally - and subconsciously - gravitate toward people who are familiar, and there's even an anthropological reason for it. "We also know that anthropologically, we used to feel safe with people who looked like our own tribe. "We knew that they were part of our own gang, so we were attracted to people that resembled the tribe." "Now, that's obviously changed. That net is so much wider than it used to be. "But there's something in our DNA that had us attracted to people who look like us."

Differences aren't all bad

With people getting married later in life, and travelling farther for education and work, there's more opportunity for individuals to pair up with different backgrounds. Online dating is also starting to change the game - people are no longer limited to finding a partner within their social circle, or immediate environment. And while a sense of familiarity is comforting, it'll only take your relationship so far. "It's the way we engage with each other that's the glue that will hold a relationship together.

"The relationship is not doomed if your partner looks different to you."

Reminding us of our parents

Another study also found that people were subliminally attracted to features of their opposite-sex parent. "That's our earliest template of what a relationship looks like, so it's not unusual that we seek to replicate that in some way." A further study looked at the phenomenon of married couples who grew to look more like each other over time, with decades of shared emotions resulting in a closer resemblance, with similar wrinkles and expressions.

"We influence each other through the time we spend together."

Do number 1 pencils exist?

Lead pencils are graded on a scale from No. 1 to No. 4 based on how much graphite is inside the core. The #1 pencils are the softest, while the #4 pencils are the hardest.

What is in Pencil Lead?

A pencil's core, aka the "lead," isn't actually lead at all. It's mostly a non-toxic mineral called graphite, which is in a powdered form and mixed together with water and clay. Hundreds of years ago, raw graphite was the only ingredient used inside of pencils. Pencil makers thrived on this mineral all throughout Europe, with the industry really booming throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. Isaac Newton, Ernest Hemingway, and Thomas Edison are just a few of the many great thinkers who brainstormed with a graphite pencil in hand. All this popularity, however, caused graphite to quickly became a scarce commodity. A French painter named Nicolas-Jacques Conté completely saved pencils from going extinct by cutting down the amount of graphite used inside and mixing it together with water and clay instead. This is what's found inside the pencils we use to this very day!
