From lead actors and actresses to pop icons, professional athletes and royal princes, we’ve all had a celebrity crush at some point or another. But who are our ultimate crushes and what do we think their eyes reveal about their personalities?

With our eyes being one of the most effective ways to communicate attraction, whether that’s through lingering eye contact or a smouldering gaze, we surveyed 2,000 people on what characteristics they associate with the eyes of some of the most prominent celebrities. We also asked them about which celebrities they fancy the most, which eyes they’re most drawn to and whether they really believe in the idealised Hollywood romance of love at first sight…

The most and least attractive male celebrities

Whilst our celebrity crushes can sometimes seem all-consuming, the chances we will ever meet them in real life are, unfortunately, very slim. Despite this, almost three in 10 (29%) say they believe in love at first sight which suggests it’s considered fairly normal to fall in love with someone we don’t even know! He is also the most attractive male celebrity amongst 45-54-year-olds (8%) and 55+-year-olds (11%). One of the most iconic footballers of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo came in second as the most attractive male star. Men were more likely to rate him as the most attractive (8%) compared to women (6%) whilst 34-44-year-olds fancy him the most (11%). With his smouldering good looks and charismatic charm, it’s no wonder Robert Downey Jr. was ranked as the third best looking male celebrity by our respondents, being the most popular amongst 45-54-year-olds with 7% of this generation ranking him as the most attractive Hollywood’s latest heartthrob, marvel star Tom Holland takes fourth place as the best looking male celeb, with just a few votes less than Robert Donwey Jr. But if you're more interested in the bodybuilder physique, look no further than Dwayne Johnson, who ranks fifth. Just 2% of our respondents said they found Boris Johnson, Conor Mcgregor and The Weeknd the most attractive celebrities whilst just 3% chose Prince Harry and Bruno Mars. Kate Middleton, Scarlett Johansson and Ariana Grande all take the top three spots for most attractive female celebrities It appears many of our respondents are a fan of the British royal family with a huge 15% revealing they consider Kate Middleton to be the best looking female celebrity. Popular amongst both men (13%) and women (17%), the Duchess’ glossy locks and refined style appear to be a big hit, especially amongst 55+-year-olds with 25% of this generation voting her as the most attractive. It’s no surprise the iconic leading lady, Scarlett Johansson, came in second as the best looking female star. With a career spanning several decades, her conventional good looks have made her one of the most popular Hollywood celebrity crushes, especially amongst 45-54 year-olds with 14% rating her as the most attractive celeb.

Pop icon Ariana Grande takes third place as the most attractive female celebrity with 25-34-year-olds (13%) and 16-24-year-olds (12%) being the biggest fans of her unique style, and undeniably good looks. Australian icon Margot Robbie ranks in fourth place after making herself known to the world in Wolf of Wall Street, whilst Zendaya takes fifth place as the most attractive female celebrity. Just 2% of our respondents revealed that they find Simone Biles the most attractive and just 3% said they’re crushing on Serena Williams, Billie Elish and Meghan Markle.

The male celebrities with the most attractive eyes

1. Paul Rudd

Voted as PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2021, our respondents couldn’t get enough of Paul Rudd’s eyes with 12% voting them as the most attractive. Despite only 4% saying he is the best looking male celebrity overall, both men (9%) and women (14%) prefer the handsome actor’s eyes the most. Is it his charming gaze that draws us in or his unique green eyes that make us want to stare into them all day? After blue eyes, our respondents revealed that they find green eyes the most attractive.

2. Harry Styles

Beloved by many, Harry Styles surprisingly didn’t make it into the top five list as one of the most attractive celebs (with just 4% voting him as the best looking), however, his eyes tell another story. Coming in second place, it’s 16-24-year-olds who are drawn in the most by Harry Styles's twinkly green eyes with 14% agreeing they are the most attractive.

3. Prince William

Many of us have dreamt of being swept away by a handsome prince and it appears our respondents have too, with Prince William’s eyes coming in third place as the most attractive (9%). With 21% revealing they find blue eyes the most attractive, it’s not surprising that Prince William’s eyes top this list despite just 4% voting him as the most attractive male celebrity overall.

4. Bruno Mars

With his angelic good looks, our respondents couldn’t resist falling into Bruno Mars’s deep brown eyes, coming in joint third place with Prince William (9%). Despite brown eyes being voted as the least attractive eye colour with 31% saying they don’t find this shade appealing, Bruno Mars proves us all wrong by charming our respondents with his smouldering gaze.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo

Not only topping the list as the second most attractive male celebrity, Cristiano Ronaldo’s eyes are also voted the fourth most attractive (7%).

6. Tom Holland

It appears many of us can’t get enough of Tom Holland with his dark brown eyes being voted as the fifth most attractive (6%).

1. Taylor Swift

4. Zendaya

Ranked as the fifth most attractive celebrity overall, it’s no surprise that Zendaya’s eyes also sit within the top five (8%). A fan of dark smokey eye makeup to help frame her deep coloured eyes, it’s easy to fall in love with her piercing gaze.

5. Margot Robbie

You’d be forgiven for getting lost in Margot Robbie’s blue twinkly eyes, and it appears many of our respondents can’t get enough of them either, as she comes in fifth place as having the most attractive eyes, just a few votes behind Zendaya (8%).

The importance of eyes in love and attraction

It is often thought that the eyes are the window to the soul, but how important are they for determining someone’s personality and deciding whether we’re attracted to them?

Three in 10 (30%) of our respondents revealed they think that eyes are the most important feature when they’re interested in someone (although just 24% of men agreed compared to 36% of women). Another three in 10 (31%) admitted they will make eye contact with someone to let them know they’re interested in them romantically.

But what do our celebrities' eyes say about them and how important are they for helping us to shape a picture of their emotions, thoughts and feelings?

Paul Rudd and Kate Middleton’s eyes are associated with the most positive characteristics whilst Boris Johnson and Meghan Markle’s tell a different story… Not only is Paul Rudd rated as having the most attractive eyes out of all our male celebrities, but his eyes are also the most likely to be associated with the following characteristics whilst Boris Johnson was associated with the most negative: We also asked our respondents about what characteristics they most associate with the following female celebrities.
