Vermont-made films are a rarity, but two movies with strong Vermont connections are about to make their premieres this month. “Soulmates” is a romantic comedy written by and starring Stephanie Lynn and Alexandra Case. Lynn is an actress, screenwriter, singer and producer who grew up in Montpelier. She has had guest roles in TV shows including “How I Met Your Mother” and “Castle.” Case is a writer, producer and actress who grew up in Brownsville. She now lives in Los Angeles and has studied with the renowned improv-comedy group The Groundlings. According to the film’s distributor, Vertical Entertainment, “Soulmates” is about lifelong best friends, Sam and Jess, who “are each other’s everything. But when Jess meets a handsome out-of-stater, Landon, Sam begins to fear she’s being cast aside. To make matters worse, a massive corporation — who happens to be Landon’s employer — is threatening the small-town way of life they both know and love in Vermont. In order to save her sisterhood and protect the town, Sam will pull out all the stops to keep both Jess’s relationship and the ominous company from developing any further.”

“Soulmates” was filmed in the fall of 2018, primarily in Chittenden County. Champlain College in Burlington provided interns throughout filming, and local actors who appear include Sean Moran of Shelburne, Monica Callan of Waterbury and Rusty DeWees of Elmore. The movie was filmed in Burlington-area locations that many viewers will recognize. Those sites include:

Williston, Riverhill Farm.

Waterbury Center, Zenbarn.

Shelburne, Shelburne Marina and Palmer’s Sugar House.

Colchester, Sam Mazza’s Farm Market.

Huntington, Sleepy Hollow Inn.

Milton, Georgia Mountain Maples.

“Soulmates” will be shown Nov. 12 at the Savoy Theater in Montpelier, though details of the screening have not been announced. The film is available as video on demand starting that day via outlets including Comcast/Xfinity and Directv. “Soulmates” will also be available through Apple/iTunes.

‘Underdog’

The Vermont film premiere of the documentary “Underdog,” about a farmer near Middlebury, takes place Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury. “The film, created by Middlebury College alum Tommy Hyde, profiles the curiously optimistic tale of Doug Butler, a hardscrabble Vermont dairy farmer who risks losing the only home he’s ever known to chase his dreams of dog mushing in Alaska,” according to information provided by the Town Hall Theater.

"Paint":Owen Wilson cast as a Bob Ross-like painter in Vermont?
