Remember—you’re asking questions, not conducting an interrogation. When you ask a question, lean forward and make eye contact waiting for the answer. Listen and interact with the response the way you would with your best friend. Nod, smile when appropriate, and mirror his verbal and facial cues. Use the questions as a starting point. Is he overly attached to mom, or one of those guys who have trouble respecting women? Get an idea of what you’re dealing with by asking him about his relationship with his mom.
