What is Twin Speak?

I was at my twins' 18 month old checkup when our pediatrician recommended that I take one of them to be evaluated for speech delay. I had noticed that he didn’t speak as many words as his brother, but in my effort to not always try to compare them (as all twin parents do), I had just assumed that one may be a bit more advanced than the other. We got in touch with Early Intervention, which sent a specialist to our home for an evaluation. It was then that the specialist told us that my son would be a good fit for the program. What is Early Intervention? It is program that focuses on supplying services to children who have special needs. The goal of this program is to help children as early as they can to address developmental delays early so they can prevent the child from needing additional services later on. This program is for ages 0-3 years, and services include speech, occupational and physical therapy. These services are free in many states, but levels of service differ by state. Twice a week a speech therapist comes to our home and works with our son. She works with him while his twin and their younger sister play in the same area to keep them all together. She also interacts with all three children, as it is important to allow the child to work in their normal environment. Just recently, she spoke to me about her observation of my other twin’s speech (the one who currently is not in the program). As we watched my twins interact with each other, we observed what is known as “twin speak.” They were speaking to each other in a language that only they seemed to understand. While one twin was using some recognizable words and phrases, it was usually followed by some sort of babbling that seemed to be fully understood by the other. I hear this “twinspeak” most often early in the morning when they like to crawl into bed with one another and chat. At first, I thought it was unbelievably cute that they were close enough to develop and communicate in their own language. It was when that we learned more about Cryptophasia that we decided to get my other twinevaluated for speech therapy. Currently, they are both involved with weekly therapy and go to playgroups that focus on developing their speech skills. Cryptophasia is when twins, identical or fraternal, use a speech that only the two siblings can understand (twin speak). Over 50% of young twins form their own type of this communication. It is said that a delay in phonological development (the most basic sounds at the beginning of language learning) in one or both twins can be the main cause of Cryptophasia. Twins are able to develop this language to communicate with each other without having to adapt to the grammar of their parents' language. Without successful language development, many tantrums and melt downs can stem from toddlers having difficulty communicating their wants or needs to you.

Through speech therapy and speech focused playdates, we are now learning how to set up situations that will help them to practive and improve their language skills. I started to notice that because we are very routine in our household, I was not presenting them with as many opportunities to ask for things they that wanted or needed. We always have snack time at 10:30am, so they never ask for something to eat as they know it always comes around the exact time. I also realized that when one twin, my speaker, would ask for milk or anything else, I would automatically get two servings (for both). I now feel a bit more confident and better equipped to help my twins improve their speech. If there is any concern for your child’s speech development, it is important to get them evaluated as soon as possible. There are so many great (and free!) programs available that not many families are aware of, let alone participating in. Whether it is in-home therapy sessions, playgroups or parenting seminars, you can surely find something beneficial for your family.
