According to the study, girls are keeping new dates out of the bedroom until date number five, but before she gives up the goods, she wants two gifts or tokens of affection, five social media messages, and seven passionate kisses, not to mention a bunch of flowers.

According to the study, girls are keeping new dates out of the bedroom until date number five, but before she gives up the goods, she wants two gifts or tokens of affection, five social media messages, and seven passionate kisses, not to mention a bunch of flowers. Well, sure, flowers would be nice, but some of you will be surprised to know that I make my dates wait until date number eight. Yep, my trusty number is EIGHT! You might ask, 'erm, why eight?' To be honest there is no valid reason, only that it's one of my favourite numbers and it seemed more than an easy five. It all started when, having been broken hearted, and messed around by numerous "players" I decided it was time to implement a strategy to my dating plan. But before I put my lucky number eight to the test, I invited my girlfriends around for wine to talk about our past 'mistakes' and the few that passed date number eight. The first man that came under my new rule was a success! We met in a pub on a sunny Saturday in London's Notting Hill, we exchanged numbers and had arranged a date for the following week. On the fifth date my 'rule' came up and he was - to my surprise - very understanding and thought it was a great idea… We then dated for a year, and after that I knew it could only mean one thing - the rule works! My eight date rule has been tried and tested, and if I'm being honest… broken, too (oops)! From my experience it is always worth waiting for lucky number eight.

Why do I keep thinking about this person?

If you can't stop thinking about someone new, it may be because you're focusing on their potential, says Greer. “That's the fantasy of what you could have and what you long for, what you may feel is missing in your life, what you might have had with somebody else,” Greer says.

When someone’s stuck in your mind, you’ve usually succumbed to rumination – obsessive, constant and repetitive thinking. Think of it as thoughts running endlessly on a hamster wheel.

How difficult it is to stop thinking about people comes down to who they were to you and what they meant to you in your life at the time, according to Jane Greer, a marriage and family therapist and author of What About Me?

Maybe a former flame had given you visions of forever. Maybe a friend offered comfort in your time of need. There are many reasons people keep thinking about others, even when they don’t want to. And it’s not just past connections who may be running a loop in your mind. You can ruminate on new friends and acquaintances too. The good news is that doing this occasionally is completely normal, according to Dr Sanam Hafeez, a neuropsychologist. It only becomes a problem when coping skills (more on those in a bit) don’t help and you feel like you can’t control your thoughts.

So why might your mind latch onto thoughts of someone?
