A “haha” indicates that the sender is not interested in continuing the conversation because s/he did not want to apply extra effort to type more “ha's.” Thus, this lackadaisical response enables one to say something without actually saying it.

LESS ... MORE What fascinates me about human language is how we can say what we want to without really saying it. It’s the kind of conversation that ensues beneath what is being said — it’s the subtle conversation. In such a case, both the sender and receiver know what each one wants to communicate, but they do so effectively without it coming to the surface. A few days ago, when I texted someone, I realized that this subtle art is highly applicable in the world of texting as well. Take the three kinds of laughter: the “haha,” the “Hahaha” and the “HAHAHA.” First, a “haha” — an obligatory laughter that subtly indicates your counterpart’s lack of amusement but respect toward your attempt to lighten up the conversation — is the ultimate conversation stopper. If nothing is said after the “haha,” consider the chat over (it never really began in the first place). A “haha” indicates that the sender is not interested in continuing the conversation because s/he did not want to apply extra effort to type more “ha’s.” Thus, this lackadaisical response enables one to say something without actually saying it. If a “haha” comes across, you know that the sender was never interested in chatting with you. Also, you can check to see that you would’ve started the conversation. Second, a “Hahaha” — a smile disguised as laughter — conveys a tinge of amusement. Although it’s in the same genus as a “haha,” it differs in that it shows a genuine response to your humor. The mere fact that the sender spent an extra fraction of a second to type that extra “ha” indicates why s/he may be interested in continuing the conversation. However, this is only probable, not definite. Since the humor did not elicit an unreasonably long “haahahahahah,” one cannot be sure whether the humor was actually funny or whether the “Hahaha” was genuinely sent out. In this case, it’s best to leave the ball in the sender’s court and wait to see if s/he continues the conversation. If s/he does, you know that your humor was genuinely hilarious.

Read More »Third, a “HAHAHA,” or even a “HAHA” indicate that the sender genuinely laughed. Moreover, if the sender types something after a “HAHAHA,” it serves as a litmus test to decode whether s/he’s really interested in texting with you. If this happens, you know that things are on the right track. Congratulations! If it doesn’t, you’re still on the right track because your humor at least resulted in an eyesore text. Although the convenience of texting enables us to avoid awkward moments and confrontations, they could result in mistaken assumptions and misunderstandings. The problem arises because in the world of texting, your text is “you.” You do not have the hidden support of nonverbal cues like voice inflection, body language and facial expressions to aid you in your communication, and often, words may not do justice to what you actually mean. It may also be possible that your humor is hilarious in-person but fails in the realm of texting due to the absence of these nonverbal cues. Or, it could be that your counterpart genuinely laughed but only sent a “haha” because s/he was in a hurry. While texting has an advantage of saying something without having to say it, one needs to be careful by saying what one wants to say, thoroughly. And please, if you have “read receipts” turned on your iPhone, reply as soon as you read the text. For nothing is sadder in the world than a text that goes ignored.
