Day 1

SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 12:1-10

OBSERVATIONS:

According to verse 7, what is the purpose of spiritual gifts? According to verse 11, who determines which gifts are given to whom?

APPLICATION:

In 1 Corinthians 12:31 Paul encourages Christians to “eagerly desire the greater gifts”. We should each pray and ask God to give us spiritual gifts so that we can use them for the greater good of the body of Christ. Look back at the list of spiritual gifts in verses 8-10. Can you think of a time when God allowed one of these gifts to move through you for the benefit of another person? Explain. Write about a time when you benefited from someone else operating in one of the gifts.

Day 2

SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 13:1-7

OBSERVATIONS:

From verses 4-7, list all of the things that love IS. From verses 4-7, list all of the things that love is NOT. Look back at the lists. Put a circle around 2 things from each list that you think you do pretty well (most of the time :). Look back at the lists. This time, put an X on 2 things from each list that you believe that you need to work on.

APPLICATION:

None of us loves perfectly all of the time, but Jesus is our example of perfect love. When we realize how God has demonstrated perfect love towards us, it motivates a heart of gratitude and a desire to show that same love towards others. List out the 4 qualities you marked for your personal improvement (the X’s from questions 3 and 4 above). Beside each of these things, write out how God has demonstrated this kind of love towards you. (example: patient- God is patient with me, forgiving me each time I fail).

APPLICATION:

There’s a popular story circulating on social media that says, “People ask me if you need the Holy Spirit to go to heaven. I tell them, you need the Holy Spirit to go to Walmart.” This is funny, but it does put things in perspective. When we get to heaven we will see God face to face and we will understand things differently, but until that day the gifts of the Spirit help us live out life on earth. Love, however, is eternal. So desire the gifts, but let them always be accompanied by love.
