Country singer Thomas Rhett smashed his teeth into his wife’s teeth the first time they tried to kiss. As teenagers, Thomas Rhett and Lauren were on the trampoline in his parents’ yard. He made his big move and leaned in. Right then, Thomas Rhett’s mother opened the back door and Lauren jerked up.

“Oh, it was so bad,” Lauren Akins says, laughing.

In fact, the whole first part of their relationship was awkward and painful. But Thomas Rhett (who uses a first double name and no last name) and Lauren, both 25, got through that. They celebrated three years of marriage this past fall. Valentine’s Day is her favorite holiday.

Going through tough times made it that much sweeter.

The two have known each other since kindergarten when they were in the same class at Goodpasture Christian in Madison. They got to be friends in sixth grade, even went to the same church camp several years in a row. He was head over heels for her throughout their childhoods. Lauren, not so much. “She was just like the All-American, friendliest, nicest. She was tall, blond, beautiful, pretty much the total package for any dude from sixth grade all the way through high school,” Thomas Rhett said.

“I’m pretty sure every guy had a crush on her.”

The two dated a little in high school — the ill-fated trampoline kiss happened sophomore year — but Lauren said she decided that she and Thomas Rhett were better off just being friends.

He remembers her having a little help coming to that conclusion.

“Mitch Barnes invited her to junior/senior banquet. And that was the turning point,” Thomas Rhett said. “I was crushed.” They both went on to be in serious relationships in high school, and both nearly got engaged in college, she at UT, he at Lipscomb. But those relationships ended, and Thomas Rhett, still close with Lauren’s family, got invited to a graduation party in 2011 for Lauren’s sister. In a chat with Lauren’s dad, Thomas Rhett, then 21, revealed he was still in love with Lauren. Her dad’s reaction: “If you don’t tell her how you feel about her, I’m going to.” So Thomas Rhett spilled his guts to her on her parents’ front porch. “We stayed up ‘til 4 a.m., kissed for the first time since high school,” he said.

That kiss went much better. The couple was engaged six months later.

Lauren says she works hard to make Valentine’s Day special every year.

“Regardless of where we are in the world, Valentine's Day for us is chocolates, heartfelt letters in a Valentine's card, a good movie, flowers, and time alone with just us two,” she said. “I always somehow decorate wherever we are and make it a big pink, red and heart party,” Lauren added. “Thankfully Thomas Rhett goes along with it for me and it's a sweet memory that we have together.”
