Attraction Theory

Attraction theory is established by a psychologist, Samuel Frenning. This theory explores and explains the different reasons for people to like one another, ie. attraction. This theory also proposes different elements that will lead to or interfere with the attraction between individuals. This theory has a base in the principle of reinforcement, indicating attraction is formed and maintained based on the outcome. The repeated desirable outcome will encourage more attraction between individuals and encourage people to keep the relationship. In this theory, there are three types of attraction and four principles of attraction.

The three types of attraction are:

Physical Attraction Social Attraction Task Attraction

For easy memorization, taking the first letter of each type, they will form the phrase 'Prefer Sunny Trees'.

Physical Attraction

The physical attraction definition is the phenomenon of people being attracted based on another individual's physical appearance or features. For example, some people are drawn to movie stars as they are often handsome and good-looking.

Social Attraction

Social attraction means that one is attracted to another because of their personality. For example, a helpful neighbor will be appreciated and liked in a community via social attraction.

Task Attraction

Task attraction exists when an individual is attracted to another based on their abilities. For example, a high-achieving student in college is likely to be welcomed by their fellow students. More than one type of attraction can exist between individuals at the same time. When there is social and/ or task attraction but not physical attraction between two individuals, such a relationship is considered platonic. For a person, different aspects of them may be deemed attractive to some, while deterring for others. Thus an attraction can be viewed as the summation of all different types of attractions. As an example, someone can find a soccer player to be physically attractive but dislike the soccer player's personality. Depending on which attraction is stronger, the individual may decide they don't find the soccer player attractive overall.

Similar to different types of attraction, when taking the first letter of the elements, they will form the phrase 'A Pretty Stellar Reward'. Depending on the elements, the increase or decrease of an element may help or hinder attraction.

Appearance

People are usually attracted to people who are considered good-looking or fit. These traits are often associated with health and energy, which are important for the subconscious mind in search of a good mate with which to reproduce. Different cultures may have different standards for appearance, thus different people may find different features attractive. The better looking a person is, the more attractive they are.

Proximity

Proximity refers to the physical distance between individuals. For example, people who live close to each other, work in the same company, or often go to the same restaurant can be considered to have close proximity with each other, and proximity attraction can occur. People with closer proximity are more likely to be attracted to each other than people that are physically further away. The mere exposure effect suggests that the more time individuals get to see and expose to another, the more they will find each other attractive.

Yet it is not just a Cupid's arrow that spurs you to fall in love with the nearest person, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Neuroscience. Instead oxytocin's social magic depends on whether or not a person is in a monogamous relationship. A team of researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany and elsewhere monitored a first encounter between straight male study participants and an attractive woman in a laboratory setting. When given oxytocin via an intranasal spray before the meeting, men who had indicated they were currently in a stable relationship kept a greater physical distance from the woman in the lab compared with single guys given oxytocin and with single and “taken” guys given a placebo. Although they stayed only 10 to 15 centimeters farther away, the extra distance left the woman outside of what most people consider “personal space,” a zone reserved for loved ones. Moreover, it was not because they did not find her attractive: the monogamous men who received oxytocin rated the woman just as good-looking as the other men did. The results suggest that oxytocin has a role in maintaining relationships after they are sparked and add to growing evidence for differences in how the hormone acts to modulate social interactions—for example, promoting bonds with familiar people but provoking aggression with strangers. “It's not all positive with oxytocin,” says Dirk Scheele, a psychologist involved with the study. “And what you call prosocial or antisocial depends on your perspective.”
