What age is too early for marriage?

There's a higher risk of divorce if you marry young. "If you're a woman, until you reach 24 or 25, your risk of divorce is much, much higher than if you wait to get marriage until 24 or older," says Coontz. "In fact, every year that you delay marriage, right up into your early 30's, decreases your risk of divorce.

From Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson to Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin— and now Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra — it seems like everyday there's a new celebrity engagement reported in the news. While there's no way to know the details of anyone's relationship, and everyone is entitled to whatever relationship makes them happy, that doesn't stop the people of the internet from questioning everything from how old they are to how long they've been dating. Is there such a thing as getting married too young or too soon? Since this wedding season has been nothing short of eventful, we asked the experts about what you need to know if you're thinking about putting a ring on it.

It's not like the old days.

"Marriage today has changed so much since 1960, when half of all women were married by age 20," says Stephanie Coontz, the Director of Research and Public Education at the Council on Contemporary Families. "Young women didn't have access to as many jobs, and they were more dependent on men for support. Today, marriage requires a lot more work and negotiation. Men and women are now more flexible in their gender roles than their grandparents. Gender roles are changing so much within marriage that marrying young is quite a risk, especially if it cuts into your education."

Education should be your first priority.

"It's important to finish the basic levels of education: either high school, vocational, or a college degree," says Bradford Wilcox, the director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia. "I think that having the experience of full-time employment is also important in terms of having a financial foundation there for marriage."

You need to envision your future together.

"One of the biggest concerns is the issue of maturity," says Wilcox. "Do young people have the ability to make a lifelong decision when it comes to a future spouse, and also navigate the inevitable challenges of life today? Beyond personality and looks, you need to figure out if your partner has virtues in terms of their loyalty, fidelity, and work ethic that will carry through economic challenges and raising kids together. Be attentive to whether or not your potential spouse will be a good parent and a good friend for the duration of your life."

"In fact, every year that you delay marriage, right up into your early 30's, decreases your risk of divorce. There are always exceptions to averages, but it's so important that women and men complete their college education and know each other for a long time, given the dynamics of today's marriage."

The support of your friends and family is crucial.

"Having the support of family and friends is important," says Wilcox. "Many young adults today don't necessarily think about input from their family members, but when you look at what goes into a successful marriage down the lifecycle, couples who have parents and in-laws who are supportive of their marriage are more likely to succeed. They have more perspective on your relationship than you do because they're not an immediate part of it."

Your partner needs to support your goals.

"Don't confuse lust with love," says Coontz. "Friendship, on a deeper level, is about knowing each other's interests and sharing those interests; not just having fun together. Women are frequently higher earners than their husbands, and you have to be sure that you're picking a guy who won't be threatened by that."

The wedding is just the first step.

"Your wedding day is not going to be the biggest day of your life," says Coontz. "It is part of a journey that you and your partner should be conducting together, where both of you will be investing in your own education and careers so that you can have a life that complements the relationship, not a life that depends on the relationship."
