Originally published at NextTribe.com, the digital magazine for smart, engaged women over 45. Are you ready for a surprise? Whatever you may think about roaring libidos and lustiness being the domain of the young, a recent report says that people between 60 and 79 are most likely to cheat. Now that we’ve gotten that sensationalist stat out of the way, let’s take a closer look. For the past three decades, a research study called the General Social Survey has found that 75% of American adults believe that extramarital sex is always wrong. Less than three percent said that having an affair isn’t wrong in the least. So that’s a pretty clear message that fooling around is frowned upon.

The scoop on who’s straying

When it comes to how many people actually admit to having cheated (and this is probably an under-reported number, of course), the figure has been steady at 16%. Of those, there’s an interesting shift emerging: Over the past almost 20 years, the older generation is more often the ones doing the cheating. On the same General Social Survey, respondents were queried, “Have you ever had sex with someone other than your husband or wife when you were married?” And according to analysis by sociologist Nicholas Wolfinger, which was published on the website for the Institute for Family Studies, it’s people 55-plus who were the adulterers. People who are currently between the ages of 60 and 79 years old were the ones most likely to have an affair. One theory is that these are the people who came of age in an era that questioned monogamy and experimented with “free love,” predisposing them to “fool around” on the side. Another thought is that this generation — unlike, say, Millennials — have passed through the “midlife crisis” years, which may correlate to having a fling. See Also: Her husband wanted sex. What's the hardest age to parent?

While cases vary across parents, a survey of more than 2,000 moms showed that parents of 12- to 14-year-old teens had a harder time than parents of toddlers, elementary school children, high school children, and adult children.

To limit disagreement, you should understand and respect your teen's need for more freedom while setting reasonable limits. Open communication is key for a smooth transition into the later teens years. In severe cases, children can show signs of self-destructive behavior, such as drinking and smoking . They can also act in violent or criminal ways.

How to talk to your teen

When your child was little, you could probably have direct conversations without much trouble. But asking direct questions to middle schoolers, such as "how'd you do on the quiz?", can come across as too much. Indirect communication is more useful. Try to actively listen without much interference or questioning. Listening to your child makes them feel safe enough to tell you what's going on and ask for advice when they need it. Middle schoolers are sensitive to parents' reactions. You should address inappropriate behavior, but try to soften your language so you don't come across overly harsh or judgmental. You should talk to your teen about puberty, drugs, and alcohol. While it may seem too early, some children start using drugs and alcohol at just 9 or 10 years old. Sexual development is also a big part of the early teen years and can be a source of confusion. You don't need to tackle everything in one big talk. Instead, give your child age-appropriate information as they age through middle school. Books like The Boy's Body Book (by Kelli Dunham) and The Care and Keeping of You (by Valarie Schaefer) are good for bringing up the topic of puberty.
