What 5 people do you meet in heaven?

The people Eddie meets are- the Blue Man, the Captain, Ruby, his wife Marguerite, and Tala(read the book to know their stories). Surprisingly, out of all these five people, it is Tala- a young girl, who Eddie meets for the first time(in heaven, no less!), who had the most profound impact on him.

THE REVIEW

My tryst with Mitch Albom began when I borrowed ‘tuesdays with Morrie‘ from a friend, and on getting an idea of what the book was about, let’s say I wasn’t so enthusiastic to start it, because I find philosophy talk boring. So I was pleasanty surprised when I got to read about a dear old man suffering from ALS, and his talks with the author instead, which were the exact opposite of boring! Eddie Maintenance. For his first fiction novel (tuesdays with Morrie and other books before it were all non-fiction), Albom chooses his uncle Eddie as the protagonist-his favorite uncle, who taught Albom to play the keyboard, who did everything he could do avoid working at Ruby Pier, but still ended up as the Head of Maintenance at the Ruby Pier (an oceanside amusement pier). Eddie walks with a limp- a bullet wound to the knee caused during the war, and is very lonely in his old age, having outlived all family and friends.

An amusement park at an ocean pier

So today is Eddie’s 83rd birthday, and he is working at the pier as usual, when a cart in the Freddy’s Free Fall(a ride at the pier) comes loose. There’s an accident and Eddie dies trying to pull out a little girl from under the cart when it is falling down. This is how the story starts- by Eddie becoming a Deaddie. Just as the title says, ‘the five people you meet in heaven’ describes Albom’s imagination of what a person must experience when they go to heaven after dying. So this book describes the five meetings Eddie has with his five people, people whose lives were either altered by Eddie’s actions, or who altered Eddie’s life by theirs. So though we know nothing of Eddie at the start of the book, we get to know him, little by little, through the stories that weave his life with the lives of his five people. And though he has never met two of these five people, and barely knew two other ones, they have played important roles in his lives, as we later get to know. His birthdays interspersed between chapters impart warmth, it’s where we get to witness the interactions that perhaps otherwise wouldn’t have made it in. “Daaa daa deeee,” she sings with the melody,”…when you’re with meee…da da…the stars, and the moon…the da…da…da…in June…”

They move around the living room until Eddie breaks down and laughs. He is already taller than his mother by a good six inches, yet she twirls him with ease.

“So,”she whispers,”you like this girl?”

Eddie loses a step.

“It’s all right,”she said. “I’m happy for you.”

They spin to the table, and Eddie’s mother grabs Joe and pulls him up.

“Now you two dance,” she says.

“With him?”

“Ma!”

But she insists and they relent, and soon Joe and Eddie are laughing and stumbling into each other. They join hands and move, swooping up and down in exaggerated circles. Around and around the table they go, to their mother’s delight, as the clarinets lead the radio melody and the Romanian cousins clap along and the final wisps on grilled steak evaporate into the party air. Eddie’s 17th birthday, the five people you meet in heaven The people Eddie meets are- the Blue Man, the Captain, Ruby, his wife Marguerite, and Tala(read the book to know their stories). Surprisingly, out of all these five people, it is Tala- a young girl, who Eddie meets for the first time(in heaven, no less!), who had the most profound impact on him. The order of the people Eddie meets is decided carefully. The associated stories go from Eddie’s childhood towards his adulthood, and we don’t feel confused. ‘the five people you meet in Heaven’ is about how life does not end in death, how death is just a beginning of a new phase, a phase where you learn to let go of anger and hate cultivated during our lives(but it’s not a preachy book, trust me). It’s a book about how ‘all lives intersect‘, how any small incident in one person’s life affects another’s life profoundly. “There are five people you meet in heaven,” the Blue Man suddenly said. “Each of us was in your life for a reason. You may not have known the reason at the time, and that is what heaven is for. For understanding your life on earth.”… This is the greatest gift God can give you: To understand what happened in your life. To have it explained. It is the peace you have been searching for.” the Blue Man, the five people you meet in Heaven I like the book’s take on life after death, how death is a beginning of a new phase, the idea of five people waiting up there-a fresh and light opinion on a seemingly heavy topic! It is interesting that Albom assumes right away we will all go to heaven, considering the fact that we have been taught we go to either heaven or hell depending on our deed balance.

Oh and by the way, all atheists who must be cringing right now, like- “Ohh, I don’t believe in God and heaven and hell”- you will like this book too. Just give it a try. I also feel that this book reminds us that no matter what our social status is, no matter what our occupation is, or our wealth is, we will all get the same burial and end up in the same way. Reading ‘the five people you meet in Heaven’ will prove therapeutic for anyone stressed out, or just plain sad. It helps to know there are others like them out there and that it’s OK to be down sometimes. There’s also a movie based on the book. Go check out the trailer here.
