Should you refrigerate cologne?

Yes, absolutely! Storing your perfume in the fridge is the best way to help it stay fresh, especially during the hot summer months. Sunlight, heat from radiators and changes in temperature can all destroy perfume over time, but when stored in the cool, dark fridge it can last for years.

Wearing fragrance is easy; just a little spritz on your pulse points, and you’re good to go. But the best way to store it? Well, that can sometimes be confusing —which is why here at The Perfume Shop we’re sharing a few simple tips to help your favourite scent stay fresh for longer. Read on to discover why it’s a good idea to keep perfume in the fridge (yes, you read that right!)

Should you keep perfume in the fridge?

Yes, absolutely! Storing your perfume in the fridge is the best way to help it stay fresh, especially during the hot summer months. Sunlight, heat from radiators and changes in temperature can all destroy perfume over time, but when stored in the cool, dark fridge it can last for years. Keep perfume with fresh notes chilled Those sparkling citrus notes you’re hooked on? They may smell lively and energetic, but they’re also known for having a shorter shelf life as they tend to deteriorate quicker. So, chilling a refreshing perfume in the fridge not only keeps it more stable but also gives it maximum impact. From lemon and grapefruit to orange, bergamot and mandarin, there are lots of irresistibly zesty options to choose from. However, we can’t recommend Acqua di Gioia by Armani enough, which comes with minty notes that reminds us of a mouth-watering mojito on a sweltering day. Store perfume away from any strong-smelling foods

Spoiler alert: no one wants to spray a perfume and smell hints of leftover takeaway! When storing your scents in the fridge, be sure you don’t place the perfume near any strong-smelling foods. Pop your perfume in its own container; this way, it won’t come into contact with anything in the fridge. For scents that smell good enough to eat, why not try a gourmand fragrance with notes of vanilla, caramel, almonds and honey. Think the delicious Bonbon by Viktor&Rolf or the unapologetically sweet Candy by Prada. Place your perfume back in a cool place after spritzing

Extreme temperature change can ruin a fragrance, so once you’ve sprayed your perfume, keep it cool by popping it straight back in the fridge. Perfume should never be in direct contact with sunlight, so when you next feel like a burst of icy fragrance, simply head for the fridge again!

Replace the perfume lid as soon as you spray

Even when it’s stored in the fridge, the perfume lid should be replaced after every use to minimise any oxygen exposure. Too much oxygen inside the bottle can change the fragrance molecules and ruin the overall scent when there’s too much oxygen. Better yet, when your bottle is half full, decant into a travel spray. As well as keeping your fragrance in the fridge to ensure it remains in the best condition, there are other ways to get the most out of your favourite perfume. Want to know more?
