Is it OK to sleep with your parents at 13?

No, it absolutely is not ok. It is extremely unhealthy for both the 13 year old who is maturing, and the parents who should have a relationship outside of the child. The least that should be done is that you have a separate bed if not a bed in another room.

-- Concerned ParentDEAR CONCERNED: It is not appropriate for parents to co-sleep with adolescent children, partly because adolescents need and deserve some privacy, as they engage in the developmentally important process of figuring out who they are and what they're about.Let Your Child Sleep on Their Own by Age FiveParents should introduce sleeping in their own spaces as early as five years old. This is when they are fully grown, and still young enough to get used to the norm of having their bed and space.Recent studies indicate that near-epidemic proportions of children are co-sleeping with parents today. According to Parenting's MomConnection, a surprising 45 percent of moms let their 8- to 12-year-olds sleep with them from time to time, and 13 percent permit it every night. That said: “9pm is a sensible approach.” For teenagers, Kelley says that, generally speaking, 13- to 16-year-olds should be in bed by 11.30pm.Most 13-year-old teens are dealing with the emotional and physical changes that accompany puberty, so it's normal for your teen to feel uncertain, moody, sensitive, and self-conscious at times. During this time, it becomes more important than ever to fit in with peers.Typically, teens are tired between 10 and 11 p.m., and wake naturally between 8 and 9 a.m.It increases the risk of SIDS and suffocationParents or objects (like pillows or blankets) may unknowingly roll onto the baby at night, leading to injury, suffocation, or death. The AAP says co-sleeping is especially dangerous if the baby is younger than 4 months, was born prematurely, or had a low birth weight. The best time for a child to start sleeping alone will vary. Some families, even in Japan, encourage their child to sleep alone from the age of 0. However, other families choose to sleep together until their child enters the upper grades of elementary school.Importance of SleepThe American Academy of Sleep Medicine has recommended that children aged 6–12 years should regularly sleep 9–12 hours per 24 hours and teenagers aged 13–18 years should sleep 8–10 hours per 24 hours. After 12 months, there is no proven risk of harm. There is no evidence that bed-sharing produces children who are more spoiled or dependent. Proven harm to parents. Several studies have shown that more than half of the children who sleep with their parents resist going to bed and awaken several times during the night.According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, kids start dating at an average age of 12 and a half for girls and 13 and a half for boys. Every teen — or preteen — is different, though, and your child might be ready sooner or later than their peers. It is generally recommended that parents should hold off on letting their child stay home alone overnight until their late teens, but that decision may depend on the maturity of the child. It's hardly weird. You probably love your mommy very much. Consider it a great sign , as most 15 year olds find parental relationships awkward and become aloof during the ages of 13 - 18. You are probably very mature and socially well adjusted for your age , as you still find it comfortable to sleep in your mom's bed. However, the parenting and child development experts do seem to mostly agree that parents bathing with children is normal and healthy up until the child begins to show discomfort or the parent themselves begin to feel concern.Experts generally recommend around the age of 3 is when children are capable of self-soothing and can move to independent sleeping. Decide if the time is right for your family, and then literally set a date. If your child is old enough you can discuss it and start counting down. What is the ideal age for a first phone? Your children could be ready for a smartphone or similar device anywhere from 10 to 14, or during middle school. A sixth-grader (typically 10 to 11 years old) could be a good start for considering a phone or a wearable.Beginning at the age of 1, co-sleeping is generally considered safe. In fact, the older a child gets, the less risky it becomes, as they are more readily able to move, roll over, and free themselves from restraint. Co-sleeping with an infant under 12 months of age, on the other hand, is potentially dangerous.Co-sleeping- a way to give children securityOthers claim that co- sleeping can make your child more secure- with good sleep as a result. It is not unusual that children in different ages sleep uneasy and they can sleep more calmly by sleeping nearby their parents the whole night, even when they are a little older.Co-sleeping is a practice in which babies and young children sleep close to one or both parents, as opposed to in a separate room.Threatening to take away your teen's phone may seem like a great way to get them to do something. But it's usually not a good choice as a punishment. When you take away their phone, you're turning off the television, banning games, taking away their ability to talk with friends, and grounding them all at once.Research has shown that adolescence brings with it a shift in biological sleep patterns. Thanks to changing circadian rhythms at this stage, teens naturally get tired later on at night. It's also harder for their bodies to wake up in the mornings.During the week many of our kids are going to camp or other structured daily activities. Frequently, the weekends are less structured and the kids have the flexibility to sleep in. Having said that, I suggest a weekday curfew for 13-year-olds of somewhere between 8 and 10 p.m. during the weekends. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child defines child as, "A human being below the age of 18 years unless under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier.” This is ratified by 192 of 194 member countries. But it's perfectly normal for puberty to begin at any point between the ages of 8 and 13 in girls and 9 and 14 in boys. There's not usually any need to worry if puberty does not start around the average age, but it's a good idea to speak to your GP for advice if it starts before 8 or has not started by around 14.
