Alaska Greenland Muskox Hunting

The introduced species of Greenland Muskox has been carefully protected from the time they landed on the coast in Alaska. Although residents have opportunities for registration and subsistence-style muskox hunts, non-residents are limited to one unit with two seasons on Nunivak Island. Southwest of Bethel, Alaska 150 miles, Nunivak is home to more muskox than local residents. Almost all successful hunters contract with local transporters for their housing and transportation to the remote portions of the island.

Huntin’ Fool recommends that hunters apply in a party of two so that one does not have to make the trip alone to split the costs and it would allow both hunters to have a permit in hand. Outside of muskox hunting, there is little reason to visit Nunivak Island, but it is for sure a place that will be special to those who have made the journey and experienced it firsthand.

Does Clorox keep bears away?

Answer: Although bleach is commonly used to remove odors that might attract bears, I have never heard of using bleach to repel the bears themselves. I wouldn't count on pepper spray intended for use against people, either, because it is likely much weaker than bear spray.

Question:

I’m going fishing in the Trinity Forest rivers, and there are a lot of bears there at this time of year. I can’t afford an expensive bear deterrent: What can I use to assist me? I was told to use regular pepper spray or bleach.

Answer:

Although bleach is commonly used to remove odors that might attract bears, I have never heard of using bleach to repel the bears themselves. I wouldn’t count on pepper spray intended for use against people, either, because it is likely much weaker than bear spray. My best advice is to practice bear safety in bear country–stay out of areas with obvious bear signs (tracks, claw marks, scat, half-eaten carcasses), hang all your food and other scented items, cook and eat well away from your tent (some experts recommend 300 yards away), make noise when you hike, and don’t go out there alone.
