KEY HIGHLIGHTS The Thai couple's Guinness World Record has stood for nearly a decade now.

They kissed for almost two-and-a-half days during the 2013 competition.

The rules required couples to continue pressing their lips regardless of toilet and food breaks. Ekkachai Tiranarat and Laksana Tiranarat, took the world’s longest kiss title with a record time of 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds while other couples around them fainted from exhaustion at a Valentine’s Day event. Organised by Ripley's Believe It or Not! Pattaya , the two-day-long kissing competition in Pattaya, Thailand that ended on the eve of Valentine’s Day (February 12-14), smashed the previous record for the longest kiss by more than eight hours. Kiss me all over the place

The rules of the competition required all the nine couples, including a married pair in their 70s, to stay on their feet throughout and keep their lips pressed together in order to not break the smooch. This meant that they slurped food and liquid through a straw and even went to the toilet while kissing. "They were very exhausted because they did not sleep for two-and-a-half days, they had to stand all the time so they were very weak," Sompron Naksuetrong, vice president of Ripley's Believe It or Not!, told AFP.

Breath-taking

A same-sex (male) couple that clinched the previous year’s longest kiss came within two minutes of breaking the new record set by Ekkachai and Laksana but eventually collapsed before the couple gave in. Besides a long-standing Guinness World Record, the pair also won a cash prize of 100,000 baht (equivalent to $3,300 at the time) alongside two diamond rings.

When people kiss do their DNA?

when you kiss your partner passionately, not only do you exchange bacteria and mucus, you also impart some of your genetic code. No matter how fleeting the encounter, the DNA will hang around in their mouth for at least an hour.

SO ROMANTIC… when you kiss your partner passionately, not only do you exchange bacteria and mucus, you also impart some of your genetic code. No matter how fleeting the encounter, the DNA will hang around in their mouth for at least an hour. This means that women’s saliva could contain evidence of unwanted attention in cases of assault, or even telltale signs of infidelity. Natália Kamodyová and her colleagues at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, recruited 12 couples who agreed to kiss each other passionately for at least 2 minutes. Afterwards, saliva samples were collected from the women at 5, 10, 30 and 60-minute intervals. Because Kamodyová’s method relies on detection of the Y chromosome, it can only be used to identify a man’s DNA in a woman’s saliva. The results show that the man’s DNA was still present and could be detected through amplification after at least an hour, and possibly longer. “We’ve shown it’s possible to get a full profile, which could be useful in crime investigation to pinpoint the possible perpetrator among suspects or exclude those innocent,” says Kamodyová. Her team is investigating whether the DNA survives longer than an hour and whether it’s obtainable from the mouths of women who have died (Forensic Science International: Genetics, DOI: 10.1016/j.fsigen.2012.07.007).
