When it comes to Tarot certification, the jury is most definitely out. Some Tarot readers love the idea of becoming a certified Tarot reader and see it as an opportunity to build credibility and improve their skills. And yet others are vehemently opposed to certification, believing that something as creative and fluid as Tarot should never be ‘standardized'. If you've ever considered becoming a certified Tarot reader, but you're still on the fence, then listen up because in this post, I share everything you need to know about Tarot certification.

What is Tarot Certification? Is it even a ‘thing'? Do you really need certification? How do you get certified?

What is Tarot Certification?

Let's start with the basics. Certification is “the action or process of providing someone or something with an official document attesting to a status or level of achievement” (source: Google). When it comes to Tarot certification, it is a recognition that you have undertaken the necessary study to read the Tarot, and that you also meet a certain standard for being able to interpret and read the Tarot cards. To receive certification, you may need to submit a written exam or a practice reading. Other Tarot certifications may be more in depth, requiring that you complete a comprehensive training program, including in-person readings. Perhaps you’ll need to pass a number of quizzes or log a certain number of hours of readings. Ultimately, Tarot certification is designed to give you more credibility as a Tarot reader, both professionally and also personally. It’s a huge confidence boost especially when you need that little bit of extra validation and confirmation that you ARE a great Tarot reader. No. You don't have to be certified to be a good, or legitimate, Tarot reader. If you invest in developing your Tarot reading skills and practice reading Tarot for others, you will be well on your way to becoming a good Tarot reader, without requiring certification. However, many people choose Tarot certification because they want confirmation that they have the skills required to deliver a Tarot reading, and they actually know what they're doing. They want to be a part of a full Tarot training and certification program so that they know they've covered all bases, and don't have to spend countless days, even months, searching for free Tarot classes online without getting the full picture. And they want the increased credibility that comes with certification, especially if they go on to become professional Tarot readers. At the end of the day, no one is forcing you to be certified, and it's important we respect the choices each individual makes about what's right for them. Many people take a lot of pride in their Tarot studies and certification, and rightly so – it's an awesome achievement!

Gain Knowledge

You may want to become certified, because you want to have the educational base that gives you the confidence to read Tarot. A certification program, if it’s a good one, will help you master the fundamentals, including card meanings and complex interpretations. Sure, you could probably find some free Tarot lessons online and piece together how to read the Tarot cards, but the quality of these lessons is so varied, and who knows if you're learning the right stuff or not. Not to mention the amount of time it takes to search for the lessons, weed out the dodgy ones, and teach yourself how to read. (Hey, I was self-taught, and it literally took me years to finally work it all out.)

Tarot certification is an opportunity to learn from Tarot readers who you respect and resonate with, and who have decades of experience in reading and teaching Tarot. If you’re a hiring manager for a company, candidates with experience at well-known companies or prestigious universities automatically have an edge on the competition. Tarot Certification is validation that you’ve put in the work and have received approval from a highly reputable program.

Potential Pitfalls of Getting Certified

Unfortunately, there can be some downsides to certification. But luckily, there are ways to avoid them.

Conflicting Methods

Many of you will ask, “Who’s to say what’s right or wrong on a certification test, when Tarot is so subjective?” I think that’s an excellent question! Tarot is wonderfully fluid and following your intuition is more important than following the book. So how do we measure that?

When I was designing the Biddy Tarot Certification Program, I knew we had to really nip that concern in the bud straight away. I believe that a good program should have flexibility to embrace everybody’s different reading styles and interpretations. At the same time, you want to make sure that your certification program demands that you meet certain criteria that resonates with you.

The Book Versus Intuition

Make sure that your certification program makes an acknowledgement between book meanings and intuitive meanings. For example, if you feel that the Three of Cups signifies online dating, but no one can find that interpretation in the book, will you be penalized? Find a program that leaves room for creativity.

Personal Style

Everyone has their own method for reading Tarot cards, which is why you need to be sure that your certification program respects yours. Fast and Cheap Programs
