How do I ask God for spiritual gifts?

I ask the Lord to give me a heart of faith to trust the Spirit and the Spirit's work in my life, I ask for a heart that desires the gifts of the Spirit for the “common good,” and I ask to be open to the gifts of the Spirit in others.

“Pursue love and strive for the spiritual gifts, and especially that you may prophesy.”

1 Corinthians 14:1

All of us have different stories around our experience of the Holy Spirit personally and communally. Sometimes these are wonderful stories, and sometimes they are stories of confusion or pain. So I would submit to you an exercise that I hope proves helpful and healing not just for your personal experience with the Spirit, but the corporate experience at Immanuel. Every few weeks, I read through 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 and pray through each verse. I ask the Lord to give me a heart of faith to trust the Spirit and the Spirit’s work in my life, I ask for a heart that desires the gifts of the Spirit for the “common good,” and I ask to be open to the gifts of the Spirit in others. I ask for jealousy of others’ gifts to be quieted in me. I pray that my gifts would build up the church. I always first ask for the gift of love. As we continue in this season of prayer for our church, read these verses, pray these prayers, ask for the gifts of the Spirit. As you read through the list in this text, ask for the gifts yourself, but also ask them for our church. Ask God for Immanuel to be a church with members who have wisdom, knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, works of miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues and interpretation of tongues. Be open to what this might mean for us. Offer any fear to the Lord in trust of the Spirit’s work in us. Remember—the gifts are given as there are needs in the church: “to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” When I pray for the gifts of the Spirit in our church, I’m not praying for power or acknowledgement, I’m praying for needs that cannot be met in our own strength or resources to be met through us by the power of the Spirit. Let’s join together this week and ask that Immanuel be a place where the Spirit is able to use us to meet the needs of God’s people.
