A new study has found that women are more likely than men to report having a best friend. Their ages ranged from 18 – 80, with an average age of 31. The study found that only 85% of men reported having a best friend, versus 98% of women. Furthermore, the study shows, men’s best-friend relationships were considerably less close than women’s. This is in line with prior research showing that the male social world is built around half a dozen relationships, whereas “the female social world” is built around one or two much closer, and hence more fragile, relationships.

Factors that matter in choosing a best friend

The traits characterizing women’s friendships involved the closeness of the relationship itself, whereas men’s friendships had more to do with social activities. For example, the trait of “outgoingness” was a leading factor that men, but not women, mentioned in choosing a friend. This may be, the study’s authors suggest, because men tend to prefer social interaction in groups, whereas women have a stronger preference for one-to-one interactions. Interestingly, nether attractiveness nor athleticism played much of a role in the best-friend choices of either men or women.

Evolutionary selection pressures

These differences show that men and women view best-friend relationships very differently.

This strongly suggests, the authors write, that friendships serve different functional roles for men and women, “arising from different evolutionary selection pressures.” The study also found that only 2% of women had a romantic partner but no best friend, whereas 15% of men were in this situation.

Men more likely to have an best friend of the opposite gender

Having a best friend of the opposite gender was rare for both men and women, the study showed.

But this situation was considerably more common for men than for women.

About 22% of men reported having a best friend of the opposite gender, versus only 15% of women. This finding reflects the fact that social networks are often divided along gender lines. “Even conversations readily segregate by gender once they contain more than four individuals,” the authors write.

Relationship breakdown: best friend forever?

The study also finds that most relationships — both platonic and romantic — break down because one of the two partners feels that the other is not meeting their expectations. “Relationships break down because one party is dissatisfied with the deal they are getting,” the authors write, “not because both parties ‘agree to disagree.’ ”

Other recent psych news:

Do people prefer academic article titles with colons and question marks? Short answer: yes. A distinct psychological profile called the “frontier mentality” is still very prevalent in the western United States, a new study finds. New study finds that even though more and more people are going to college, the average American vocabulary has not increased since the 1970s. Skipping a grade in elementary school turns out to be no problem for kids’ mental health, despite what many educators still believe.

What does 💀 mean on Snapchat?

The Skull emoji 💀 is not usually used in a serious or dark way, though it's sometimes used in social media relating to death or the paranormal. More often, it is used in relation to Halloween, to uncertainty, to scary things in life, and to those things which are sure to kill us, like kettlebells or deep embarrassment.

The Skull emoji 💀 was approved as part of Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015. The difference between the Skull emoji 💀 and the Skull and Crossbones ☠️ emoji is the tone, mainly. The Skull and Crossbones ☠️ emoji conveys poison and death, quite literally: it’s often the symbol to indicate poison on a product. Meanwhile, the Skull emoji 💀 has a more fun feel … even though it still can be used when talking about death. The human skull has long been associated with death and creepy things. Being an easily identified part of a skeleton, it’s the part of the body that conveys the deepest representational meaning of life, both past and present. During the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) holiday traditions, in which late loved ones are remembered, the skull is an omnipresent symbol, represented in sugary treats and colorful art. While looking death right in the face (or what’s left of it) should be scary, the bejeweled, bedazzled, kaleidoscopic Day of the Dead treatment of the human skull has a way of turning fear into something much easier to manage. Overall, while we associate it with death, the skull has also enjoyed popularity in trendy design, being featured on everything from jewelry to clothing.
