Does threading make you look younger?

The threads also stimulate fibroblasts to produce more natural collagen, which creates a “volumizing” and rejuvenating effect. Facial wrinkles will be erased and sagging skin will be lifted, resulting in more youthful-looking skin and more defined facial features.

Thread lift has become one of the most preferred anti-aging cosmetic treatments. It is used to subtly rejuvenate the facial skin and resculpt the face shape resulting in more defined features and a youthful appearance. This non-invasive treatment is embraced by many people (including celebrities) all over the world because it is relatively safe and, yet, effective. The advantages of a thread lift technique are its relative safety and simplicity, affordable cost, minimal downtime, less risk and pain than other invasive procedures with almost immediately noticeable results. There are also other things you need to know about this revolutionary technique. Let’s dig deeper.

What is a thread lift technique?

A thread lift (or thread facelift) is also called “lunchtime facelift” or “weekend facelift” because the procedure is quite simple and generally takes one hour to complete, often without anesthesia. In this treatment, medical threads (which are made out of PDO – a dissolvable suture material) will be inserted into targeted areas in the face or in the neck with a small needle and then be pulled tight to create a lifting and tightening effect on underlying muscles. The threads also stimulate fibroblasts to produce more natural collagen, which creates a “volumizing” and rejuvenating effect. Facial wrinkles will be erased and sagging skin will be lifted, resulting in more youthful-looking skin and more defined facial features.

What are the different types of the PDO threads?

There are 3 types of PDO threads:

#1: Mono thread

This is a type of single PDO filament, which is smooth and has no barbs. This type of thread can create a powerful tightening effect but without significant lifting effect. The skin will be tightened after the new collagen starts forming around the inserted mono threads. Because it has no barbs, the mono thread always needs an “anchor” under the face to get attached to in order to sustain a lift. This type of thread is perfect for treating neck sagginess, forehead lines, sunken cheeks and facial wrinkles.

#2: Cog thread

Cog threads are mono threads with barbs around it, which help them to be able to hook to the skin tissue without any “anchor”. This type of PDO thread can enhance the structure of the skin, leading to a lifting effect. It also effectively promotes collagen formation around its barbs.

Cog threads are most effective for jawline, eyebrow and nose lifting.

#3: Screw thread (also known as tornado thread)

Screw thread is formed by intertwining one or two mono threads together around the inserting needle. It has a significant effect on giving volume to the sunken areas in the face. When two threads are intertwined, it is called “multi screw”, which doubles the “volumizing” effect. Screw threads are often used for general face lifting and volumizing, which helps the patient to attain a smaller V-line face shape with a pointy chin and more defined jaw lines.

Which part of the face can benefit from this thread lift technique?

#1: The nose

PDO threads (ideally cog threads) will be inserted into the nose to enhance the bridge and tip. Once inserted and pulled tight, the cog threads will form together to create a scaffolding structure, which helps lift the nose tip, make it sharper and smaller. A greater and higher definition of the nose bridge will result as well. The collagen production around the threads lifts the sagging skin around the nose area, giving a younger overall appearance to the face.

The number of threads needed: 20-30.

#2: The forehead

Any visible wrinkles on the forehead will be addressed with mono threads. This PDO threads can create a lifting effect and reposition sagging tissues of the forehead without risk of baldness or any visible scars. A sunken or flat forehead can be corrected as well with crew threads. By giving volume to the forehead, screw threads will get rid of the flat and sunken impression.

The number of threads needed: 10-20.

#3: The eyebrows

Many young people have to deal with eyebrow ptosis (sagging skin caused by weakened muscles). In this case, a thread lift treatment can be the best option for people who are afraid of going under the knife. The inserted cog threads can properly reposition and lift the sagging brows, allowing the patient to fully open their eyes.

The number of threads needed: 5-10.

#4: The cheeks and chin

A V-line face shape can be easily attained with a thread lift treatment. The threads will be inserted into the cheeks and chin to create a lifting and tightening effect, which results in a smaller and more well-defined face shape with a pointy chin and smooth yet defined jaw lines.

The number of threads needed: 20-30.

#5: The neck

The sagging skin on the neck can be pulled up and tightened by the combination of mono threads and cog threads.

The number of threads needed: 5-15.

The thread lift technique can be performed in a combination with dermal filler or autologous fat graft to amplify the results. The best candidates for a thread facelift are in their 30s to 50s and have relatively good skin tone with minimal signs of aging. The results of thread lift technique typically last between 18 and 24 months on average. So if the patient wants to maintain the desired look, a repetition of treatment will be needed after 1-2 years.
