God will sometimes end a relationship

God is the author of love. However, not all love stories are according to His will. He is not in favor of the relationships that defy His purposes. What are those relationships? Those that are founded on selfishness, greed, unfaithfulness, and other sins. So, how do you know if your current relationship is against God’s will? What are the signs that the Lord actually wants you to let go of it and wait for the right person He has prepared for you? Continue to read below.

Signs God Wants You to Let Go of a Relationship

1. The relationship is not according to God’s Word.

If you want to know what God’s will is in every area of your life, you just have to read the Bible. It contains instructions on how His people ought to live their lives. Of course, He also has something to say about romantic relationships. First, you will know that your relationship is against God’s will if your partner is not a believer—meaning, the person does not share your faith. He knows that having an unbeliever partner will turn your heart away from Him. The Bible verse 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” Second, if the relationship is causing you to sin against God, such as committing sexual immorality (Hebrews 13:4) and dishonoring your parents (Ephesians 6:2), it is obviously not pleasing to Him. Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. (Hebrews 13:4, NIV) “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— (Ephesians 6:2, NIV)

2. Your partner does not seem marriage- and parent-material.

God’s intention for marriage is procreation. Contrary to the modern norm, physical intimacy is meant to be done within marriage. Meaning, biblically speaking, humans are meant to conceive children as fruits of their marriage. Moreover, marriage binds the couple into a lifetime commitment of nurturing the family they build.

If you cannot see that your partner can be a good husband or wife and parent to your future kids, then the relationship is not worth taking to another level. The question is will you stay with that person even if your future together is not secure?

3. It draws you farther from the Lord.

Anything that pulls you away from your devotion to God is a distraction. God does not want anything or anyone distracting His children from drawing closer and following Him. In most cases, He would take that distraction away to get back the attention of His child. Do you think God is selfish? No. We have to remember that He is the Creator, and we humans are only His creations. Meaning, it is just right that He becomes first in our lives. Our purpose of existence is to live for Him. Thus, if anything distracts us from that purpose, He has the right to be jealous and angry.

4. You become distant from your other loved ones.

Moreover, God is not just concerned with your relationship with Him. Whether you believe it or not, the Lord is actually concerned with your relationship with other people. He wants you to be a blessing to your family and friends—those people He has put in your life to guide, protect, and take care of you. Therefore, if your current relationship is consuming much of your time that you have forgotten about your family and friends already, then God is unhappy about it. Worse, if your relationship is causing you to fight with them, it is obviously not God’s will. Remember, God is love, and He also wants you to value the love with your family and friends.

5. You are distracted from your goals.

God is also concerned with your well-being. He wants you to be productive with the life He has given you. He has put dreams in your heart to serve your direction as you pursue your specific purpose on earth. When you set goals, they are usually in line with your dreams. However, the wrong relationship will get you out of focus. If you and your partner are always fighting, expect that you will always be preoccupied with your conflicts. Or, if your boyfriend or girlfriend does not support your goals, they will discourage you from pursuing them and instead lead you to follow something else.

6. You are not growing.

Another indication that God wants to remove you from your relationship is when it does not help you grow as a person. Godly dating and marriage are supposed to help a person fulfill their purpose or call with their partner’s help. Thus, if the relationship is destroying or taking you farther away from your purpose, then it is probably not for you. How do you know if you are not growing? If you are not motivated to pursue your goals or give your best in what you do anymore, you are not growing. You are not growing socially if you have stopped mingling with other people because your partner wants your full attention. Spiritually, you are not growing if you have stopped attending church, studying God’s Word, and praying. Worse is when your relationship is ruining you. If you have started swearing, slacking, and drowning in alcohol, you have not only stopped growing, but you are also wasting away.

7. Others are warning you about your partner.

God can also use the people around you to open your eyes. It is possible that you are blinded by your feelings for your partner that your judgment is already clouded. That is why He would sometimes use others to warn you about the danger you are heading to. If your friends, family members, or anyone who cares about you starts expressing their dislike for your partner, you should stop, listen, and ponder. It is possible that they can see how unhealthy your relationship is, and they worry about you.

8. Your parents and leaders are not in favor of the relationship.

In connection to no. 7, God has set authorities above us to serve as our guide and overseers. These authorities or leaders include our parents (if you are still a minor or living under their roof), spiritual mentors, and law enforcers. Moreover, Christians are commanded to obey and submit to their leaders and not cause them grief (Hebrews 13:17). Now, if your parents, guardians, or spiritual leaders are upset because of your relationship, it means there is something wrong with it. They will not negatively react to it if they can see that your relationship is healthy. Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you. (Hebrews 13:17, NIV)

9. You have no peace in your heart.

Lastly, you would know that God wants you to let go of your relationship if you have no peace. No matter how in love you are with your partner, if deep in your soul you have no genuine joy, something is bothering your spirit. Therefore, if you have no peace about your relationship and you experience the other signs, then it is evident that God wants you to move on from your relationship. It means that He is not in favor of it, and it will only lead you to destruction.

Get Out Fast

If it is clear to you that God is telling you to let go of your relationship, stop holding on. It is maybe hard and painful to do, but someday you will be thankful to have left as early as possible. Do not worry about your heart. God will help you heal if you continue to abide by His guidance. And who knows? Your obedience now can lead you to a greater blessing—which could be meeting the right person soon.
