Does drawing affect the brain?

Drawing increases many of the cognitive functions that researches typically label as the 'creative' and 'right brained' activities. Intuition increases. Produces positive brain chemistry like Serotonin, Endorphins, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine.

Human beings are creative machines. Creation is an ongoing process that defines us both biologically and psychologically. Our brain has built in tools that allow each of us to adapt, alter, and control our environments in a way that secures the perception of survival. Unfortunately, our society has given a very confining definition to what constitutes an act of 'creation’. This brief post would give you some food for thought. As you read, it is vital to remember that your brain LIKES to create. It is in your DNA, it is in your cells, it is in your sub-atomic structure. YOU are a creative being.

Now, here is a question: Do you like to draw? I didn't ask if you were an artist, if you were any good at it, or if you could draw a straight line. I just asked if you liked to draw?

Why?

The act of drawing affects your brain in a way like nothing can. Check out these benefits that drawing has on your brain: Improves hand-eye coordination It can actually add synapses to your neurotransmitters. This means that memories and experiences stored in your brain can become stronger, more vivid, and easier to access. Drawing increases many of the cognitive functions that researches typically label as the 'creative' and 'right brained' activities. Intuition increases. Produces positive brain chemistry like Serotonin, Endorphins, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine. Your brain stem can actually get thicker. Your awareness of your surroundings can get sharper. Your memory can improve. It produces an overall state of alertness that all of your other brain functions can use for improvement. Brains are mysterious. These results are studied all over the world. But I submit that 'drawing' is the purest form of creation that can produce deliberately. We are literally taking our brain's machine and creating something 'outside' of ourselves as an interpretation of something inside of ourselves.

Are artists selfish?

All artists are incredibly selfish. Recently I was speaking with a colleague of mine about the selfish nature of artists. This may sound harsh, or overly critical, but it is true. All artists are incredibly selfish. But from the perspective of a curator, I am envious of the ways in which some artists are not afraid to take up space, speak their minds, and demand a sense of appreciation or love from their viewers. Artists are selfish in a way that benefits their community and themselves. They have found a way to speak out about injustice, mental illness, beauty, and ugliness in a way that is bold and eloquent. They are selfish in the way that they assume others will always understand their work and profoundly impact another person’s state of mind. But I support this behavior because I believe artists are able to tap into a collective sense of spirituality and well-being that can be hard to reach in a community that has been traumatized. I have been a victim of this selfishness in the past, particularly when I have come upon a piece of work that has brought me to tears because of its beauty and sharp emotional undertones. Artists are selfish in a sense that they own a piece of humanity. Without art, the world would be so much harder to navigate. We wouldn’t be able to see through the industrial grey that has overtaken our environment. We all need the messiness, vibrancy, and texture that art brings to our lives. I hope artists never lose their sense of selfishness. It is a vice that shapes our lives and splashes color onto a world that desperately needs a new coat of paint.
