The term originated as an abbreviation of the word "baby" or "babe".[2][7][8] It has been suggested that the term originated as an acronym for "before anyone else", but this is unlikely and this false etymology is probably an example of a backronym.[4][6][7][9] An alternative spelling ‘Bay’ with identical meaning was used by author Isaac Asimov in his Foundation series.
