Can we call miss to married teacher?

By Abhishek Anand: Just as male teachers do not put 'Mr' after writing 'Professor' or 'Doctor' before their names, in the same way, now female teachers also don't have to use words like 'Ms' or 'Mrs' to identify their marital status.

A campaign by the teacher of a BHU women's college has led to a big change -- women teachers now no more need to put 'Ms' or 'Mrs' before their names to denote their marital status. By Abhishek Anand: Just as male teachers do not put 'Mr' after writing 'Professor' or 'Doctor' before their names, in the same way, now female teachers also don't have to use words like 'Ms' or 'Mrs' to identify their marital status. This major move is due to the campaign of a female teacher of a women's college of Banaras Hindu University which paid off and now is also being implemented in other women's colleges.

Even a small change can give a big message to society. The step taken by one college is bringing this message to all the higher educational institutions of the country. From now on, female teachers can implement their own choice for putting 'Ms' or 'Mrs' before their names. They cannot be forced anymore to use these words which denote their marital status.

Sociology teacher wrote to VC last year

Last year, Dr. Pratima Singh, a sociology teacher of a BHU women's college, Mahila Mahavidyalaya, had written a letter to the vice-chancellor demanding this change, which was also appreciated by the VC. However, it could not be implemented as the institute was closed due to Covid-19. Now, the effect is finally visible in the women's college of Banaras Hindu University.

Gaur said that whether it was on a name-plate or on a seniority list in her college, the use of 'Ms' or 'Mrs' was observed everywhere even though the women were selected on the basis of their merit. Why is denoting the marital status so important?

This question prompted her to write to the VC last year which in turn earned her appreciation. She said that even though the move was adopted a bit late, it was finally here. The Department of Sociology of BHU had already adopted the practice and Gaur credited the BHU administration and Senior Professor Rita Singh for the same.

Support from other teachers, students

Professor Rita Singh said that this move would be a big step towards positive change. She said that the sociology department had supported this since the matter came to the fore. If marriage was not a qualification factor, it need not be denoted in the academic field, she said, adding that unnecessary words should be removed. BHU Vice Chancellor Rakesh Bhatnagar, Prof VK Shukla, and Neeraj Tripathi have helped to remove the unnecessary marital denotation tags, she said. "It is expected that the change started from now will spread to the whole country and we will be able to move forward in the fight for our identity," said the professor.

Students are also excited with this new change.

Research student Shivani Pal said that if male teacher names were not preceded with 'Mr', there was no need for 'Ms' or Mrs' before the names of female teachers as well.

"A person is identified by his or her ability and not by a specific indicator. It is a matter of pride for the girl students that they is associated with BHU Mahila Mahavidyalaya," she said. Another research student Archana Dubey said that the change was very important. "Instead of marital status, now only the qualifications of the female teachers would be visible. In the future, students like me will also benefit from this and I am feeling very proud now," she said. She wants this change to be brought in the educational institutions of the whole country.
