Can a teacher force you?

A teacher can't force you to do anything in a classroom. Your actions may result in the instructor removing you from the class or punishing you for your refusal, but the teacher, school and district don't have the authority to make you do something you don't want to do.

Can a Teacher Force You to Do Something? Education

| K-12

A teacher can't force you to do anything in a classroom. Your actions may result in the instructor removing you from the class or punishing you for your refusal, but the teacher, school and district don't have the authority to make you do something you don't want to do. If you refuse to follow school guidelines, you may see the district, school or the teacher denies you the right to stay in the class -- or remain as a member of the student body. Class Rules Instructors have the right to set up rules for the class, as long as the requirements meet federal legal requirements as well as district and school policies. Teachers may not, for example, force students to stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance, according to the American Center for Law and Justice. Students who don't agree with the rules can request a transfer to a new classroom or a change in district schools. The American Civil Liberties Union notes that schools cannot, however, physically force students to do something that violates the federal constitution or personal religious beliefs. Illegal Activities In states, districts and schools that allow physical force by the teacher, the official policy defines the amount and type of force approved for use by classroom teachers or school officials. Policies define prohibited corporal punishment and also list approved activities and acceptable actions to change student behavior. "Education Week" reported in 2013 that 19 states allow students to receive physical punishment to elicit behavior changes. These laws sometimes allow physical paddling or hitting as punishment. Personal Whims Students sometimes have problems with rules that force them to perform actions that they don't like. The reasons for school regulations come from past experience, and children sometimes fail to understand the justification for the rules. When students follow personal whims without thinking about the potential results of their actions, problems frequently occur. A teacher may request a student follow behavior rules to maintain class order and complete daily assignments. When behavior becomes an ongoing problem, teachers and administrators may ask the child to leave the school, temporarily or permanently, to maintain order and safety.
