Read More »I'm gaining a new appreciation for couples who make it an entire year without breaking up. A year is actually a pretty long time...especially in this day and age when the average attention span is miniscule. A year includes peaks and valleys in a relationship that you have to traverse to make it through. (opens in new tab) I recently came across a study in Men's Health that outlined the most common breakup points in the year. (opens in new tab) This info was gathered after monitoring Facebook profiles referencing breakups. It was interesting to see that breakups spiked during certain points in the year. 1. Overspends. On everything. Starting with new bed sheets (well, we can't sleep in ones that remind us of him, can we?) followed by the edgy (read: HIDEOUS) break-up haircut. £300 down and we feel sooo much better… Nawt. 2. Drinks. A lot. When we're not drinking, we're sending the wine glass emoji, followed by a question mark, to everybody in our phone book. 3. Stockpiles salty snacks. Our pathetic appetites can't handle a full meal right now, so Dairylea triangles and Mini Cheddars count as dinner. And, OK, maybe the odd Malteser bunny/Ben & Jerry's tub. 4. Tries to be 'fine' way too soon. Step 1: Plan one mother of a night out to celebrate our single girl status. Step 2: Begin crying at 9pm into our pinot grigio. Sigh. 5. Tells lies. When he texts to see how we're doing, we reply with, "Sorry, whose number is this?" Yup, really mature. *Slow clap* 6. Tries to be mates with him. Spoiler: it never happens (or at least, not straight away anyway). Stop trying to be cool and just spend the month hating him already. 7. Uploads thinly-veiled digs at him via Instagram quotes. 'Trust? Years to earn, seconds to break'.
