According to a new study published by the academic journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, attractive people have better immune systems. For the study — which was released earlier this week — researchers at the Texas Christian University took photos and blood tests from 79 women and 80 men in an attempt to identify a potential correlation between good looks and immunity, the New York Post reports. It turns out good looking people are genetically blessed — in more ways than one. (Getty) The first part of the experiment saw the lucky participants line up and pose for photos while maintaining "neutral facial expressions." The very Zoolander-eque experiment forbid participants from wearing make up to really ensure everyone was on an even playing field. In the second part of the experiment, 85ml of blood was taken from each person for testing. Participants then faced a jarring reality as 492 volunteers rated their looks based on the photographs that were taken of them — researchers collated the ratings along with the results of the blood tests to make final conclusions. Academics initially theorised that there would be a positive correlation between attractiveness and immunity. This was based on the notion that humans are biologically programmed to gravitate towards a healthier mate. In the study researchers wrote, "Features such as clear skin, prominent cheekbones, bright eyes and full, red lips have been deemed attractive throughout recorded human history." Academics initially theorised that there would be a positive correlation between attractiveness and immunity. (Getty) And while attractiveness is "sometimes punctuated by idiosyncrasies," the researchers purported that it is "often consistent across time and space". The experiment confirmed researcher's theories, proving that attractive people really are genetically superior, as their blood was found to have higher rates of phagocytosis. If you're asking yourself what phagocytosis is and how that proves anything, don't worry you are not alone. Essentially phagocytosis is "the process by which specific white blood cells ingest foreign particles" and this is important because "phagocytes play a central role in innate immunity by eliminating bacteria, fungi and malignant cells". 'People who go out to a bar looking to talk to someone attractive are really just following their instincts to find a high-quality mate.' (Getty) You no longer have to feel superficial for judging someone based on their looks as the authors of the study say "perceptions of attractiveness may play a more important role in guiding the choice of partners with high-functioning immune systems." The researcher who led the study, Summer Mengelkoch, told the Daily Mail, "People who go out to a bar looking to talk to someone attractive are often dismissed as being shallow and told, 'It is not all about looks.'" "But they are really just following their instincts to find a high-quality mate."
